How it works
Why regular nail trimming is essential
Long nails are more than a cosmetic issue — they affect your dog’s comfort, movement, and long-term health.
How dog nails grow
A dog’s nail contains a blood vessel and nerve called the quick. The quick grows with the nail, so when nails are left untrimmed it extends further down. That makes it hard to safely shorten overgrown nails in one go — cutting the quick is painful and causes bleeding.
What is quick recession?
The quick can be encouraged to recede. Trimming little and often — typically every 2–4 weeks — slowly shortens the nail and moves the quick back into the toe. Over time, even severely overgrown nails can be restored to a healthy length without unnecessary discomfort. Patience and consistency are key.
Health problems caused by overgrown nails
- • Pain when standing or walking
- • Altered posture and joint strain
- • Reduced grip and slips on smooth floors
- • Broken or torn nails
- • Nails curling into paw pads
- • Worse arthritis symptoms
- • Reduced willingness to exercise
- • Increased stress and anxiety
Dew claws are especially important. They rarely touch the ground, so they do not wear down naturally. Without trimming they can grow long, curl back, and even grow into the skin, causing infection and pain.
How often should nails be trimmed?
Every dog is different. Age, breed, activity levels, walking surfaces, and genetics all affect growth. A simple check: if you can hear nails clicking on hard flooring, they are usually longer than ideal.
The benefits of regular maintenance
Routine nail care helps your dog walk naturally, maintain healthy posture and joint alignment, reduce the risk of injuries, feel more confident on slippery floors, and make future trims quicker and less stressful through gradual quick recession. Regular maintenance is always kinder than waiting until nails become overgrown.
